Pink team 2010 - Rachel Mummey

Hey y'all. I'm Rachel Mummey. I just finished up an internship at The Virginian-Pilot. I'm in Iowa right now shooting a documentary project about families who have moved here from the greater metropolitan area of Chicago. In a few weeks I'll head down to The Palm Beach Post for another internship.

I love photography. I love storytelling. Listening to someone tell it to you or witnessing events unfold before your very eyes... There is nothing better in this world. I'm so excited to rock it out with everybody. It's going to be such a fun weekend.

My photography has been featured on New York Times Lens Blog, Multimedia Muse, News Photographer Magazine, Photo District News, and The Kobré Guide. In 2009 it was recognized by College Photographer of the Year and Pictures of the Year International.

I Need Some Information

I need each of you to answer 4 quick questions for me...
1-What is you cellphone number?
2- Will you have a car at the workshop?
3- Are you proficient at Multimedia?
This does not mean "I tried it once or twice." It means Proficient. This is so we can get a handle on assignments.
4- What Camera system do you use? Nikon, Canon, or other.
Nikon is the major sponsor. They provide additional Nikon equipment for student use at the workshop.
If you do not shoot Nikon, you must rely only on the equipment you bring.
Lighting equipment will also be made available.
Students, please list what equipment you will be bringing.
If you are a Nikon shooter, you may borrow additional equipment if it is available.

EAW Pink Team 2010 member - Beck Diefenbach

My name is Beck Diefenbach and I am a staff photographer at the Daily Chronicle, a small newspaper in DeKalb, Ill.

When I am not shooting daily news, features and sports, I am throwing a ball for my roommate's dog, playing softball or working on personal projects.

I graduated from the University of Illinois in 2007 and majored in Aviation Human Factors. I was planning on being an airline pilot but decided to go into photojournalism my senior year in college.

I am very excited to meet and work with all of you! I am extra excited because the day before I meet you is my last day at my newspaper job. I have quit the Daily Chronicle and am planning on moving back to my hometown of San Francisco, Calif.

I don't have a job set up, nor do I know any editors on the West Coast, but this is what I need to do.

I like to think that I shoot for the reader. Nothing makes me happier than hearing how my images have affected people. That is what I work for everyday.

My blog: http://beckdiefenbach.com/blog/
My Portfolio site (under construction): http://beckdiefenbach.com/editorial/

Here is a taste of the kind of stuff I like to shoot:

Portfolio

Portfolios....

There is a great thing called "The 11:30 Club" where you can have you work reviewed by industry editors and photographers such as Jimmy Colton, Nancy Andrews, David Griffin and more. Bring your portfolios!

The sooner you get on the list of the editors, the sooner you'll get seen. You may he tired and tempted to skip the 11:30 Club, but don't. This might be your place for your "Big Break". Editors are always looking for new talent and they often scout at the 11:30 Club.

I suggest bringing either a book or a laptop with your work. Just remember that if you have your portfolio on your laptop, be sure to bring your chargers and a suitable editing suite. I really like Photomechanic by Camera Bits. You can download a 30 day trial.

Keep your portfolios concise. Only show editors what you want to shoot. If you like portraits, show portraits. If you like sports, show sports. If you like both, keep them separate and show them separate.

Let me know if you have anymore questions.

Thanks,
Stacy

EAW Pink Team 2010 - Lung Liu

My name is Lung and I am a self-taught documentary/portrait/landscape/etc... photographer. I have been photographing for a few years now, but haven't been able to figure out how to actually survive off it, or even get enough of a return to pay off the film costs, but I'm still trying to live the dream. I've done well in PX3, International Photography Awards, PhotoLife Image International, and a few others as well as exhibited in Festivals such as Foto Freo, La Bodega, and soon at the Angkor Wat Photography Festival. Not many galleries on my resume, though. Some of my work can be seen here:

I recently spent a week at the 2010 Burning Man Festival and undergone an intense personal experience. As part of introducing ourselves, I think I will share part of this photoessay instead of something more technically impressive, but less about me.

Kill Your Darlings

The underlying foundations of my work have always dealt with loneliness, how it affects us and how we respond to it. It is the one theme that is present in everything that I have done.

Beauty makes me lonely and the isolation of the dust storms relieves it, but there always exists an overwhelming sense of sadness throughout my experience at Burning Man. I was forlorn and shyer than default.

It wasn't until my campmate, Chris, told us to kill our darlings that I understood the importance of the tenth principle of Immediacy. It has become the singular most important principle to me and how I view and experience life. This is our time - it will not come again. Touch now before waiting for a kiss. Kiss now before waiting for something that will never come. Kill your darlings and find out what is truly precious to you. This lesson hadn't came to me until the end and I truly didn't feel as if I was making any form of meaningful connections until our exodus.

This is the document of my journey.

EAW Pink Team Member - Des'ola Gunter

Stacy, this is an awesome idea about having a blog to share with one another. I look forward to hearing what others have to say! I do have a question and that is: Will we need to bring a portfolio? I have thought about bringing my general graduation portfolio which is in a 13x19" book.

My name is Des'ola Gunter, and I'm from a small town in South Carolina called Batesburg-Leesville. I transferred through three colleges before finding the one I knew I wanted to graduate from, the Art Institute of Charleston. In June, I was a part of the first graduating class to walk across the stage and received my Bachelor's of Fine Arts in Photographic Imaging. Currently I have focused on portrait photography, mostly outdoor and in rural southern areas. No matter where I am at, whether I am in South Carolina or even as far north as Connecticut, I have found a way to have my images feel ethereal and Southern.
My most recent awards have been winning Award of Excellence in 2010 in the Visual Culture Awards and being College Photographer of the Year semi-finalist in 2008.

Below are some of my most recent photographs:

I look forward to meeting everyone at EAW on October 8th!

Always,

Des'ola

What to Expect on the First Day...

Don't stress about workshop. It's like a giant family reunion and you are the new cousin. Most of the staff, Black Team and contributors know each other well and are eager to welcome you into their family.

Be ready for all kinds of weather. I do not recommend any sandals or summer wear. I say layer, layer, layer. In Jeffersonville, it can be sunny one day and pouring rain the next. It's very brisk in the barn, so pack a warm jacket too.

You'll meet lots of people on the bus ride from NYC to Liberty (where your hotel is located). Take the opportunity to shake hands and share stories. These folks might be a friend for life - you never know. Just don't be shy.

Each student will get a welcome bag with "stuff" and your Team's colored bandanna. Obviously ours will be some type of pink color. I'm gunning for a darker pink, but we'll own the pepto-inspired pink too. We'll see. You will also be assigned a roommate.

Once you are checked into your hotel room, you'll get on a bus to "Thee Barn". You will be cheered the entire time. When I went as a student, I was so embarrassed. Looking back though, it was pretty cool. I think you'll like it.

You'll go into the barn and find your table, which is indicated by the bandanna in the center of the table. The bandannas will be shifted throughout the duration of the weekend, so everyone will get an opportunity to sit near and far from the stage. Then you will be yelling the rest of the weekend!

Welcome to our new BLOG!!!

Stacy Pearsall - Pink Team Leader

My name is Stacy Pearsall and I got my start as an Air Force photographer at the age of 17. During my time in the service I traveled to over 41 countries and attended S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. I am one of only two women to win the NPPA Military Photographer of the Year competition, and the only woman to have won it twice. During my three tours in Iraq, I earned the Bronze Star Medal and Commendation with Valor for heroic actions under fire.

My work has been published in various national and international media as well as documentaries. I've shared my experiences as a female combat photojournalist with the world through Popular Photography, Newsweek and even Oprah.

I now own the Charleston Center for Photography, which is a photographic education center and studio rental source in Charleston, S.C. I travel the world teaching photography and I continue to photograph assignments for editorial and commercial clients.

Hey there Pink Team folks! I hope you are all brimming with anticipation about EAW next month. I know I am. EAW is not only a time for you to learn a lot, but for folks like myself to be inspired by photographers like you.

I've created this blog because I want to get to know you all. Plus, I want to give you a platform in which you can ask questions. I've been helping at EAW for many years, so has Santiago Lyon and Mike Stewart. We've heard and seen it all - well most of it all.

Ask ANY questions you may have!

This blog is also a place to get to know each other too. So share some pictures and stories. Let's get some dialog going and let's start building some team-age!
